Why Sorin Markov matters

Sorin became a vampire through his grandfather Edgar’s blood ritual, an ordeal whose force ignited his spark. Millennia of travel made him one of the oldest active planeswalkers, but Innistrad remained the place he treated as his responsibility. He did not seek to eliminate its monsters; he sought a balance in which humanity endured and predators did not destroy their own future.

Creating Avacyn was Sorin’s most ambitious answer. The archangel and her wards protected human civilisation while stabilising the plane’s ecology. When Avacyn was corrupted beyond recovery, Sorin destroyed his own creation. The decision saved Innistrad from one danger while removing the shield that had defined its hope.

Long before that crisis, Sorin joined Ugin and Nahiri to imprison the Eldrazi on Zendikar. His failure to answer when the prison weakened shattered Nahiri’s trust. Their confrontation ended with her trapped in the Helvault, and her later revenge brought Emrakul to Innistrad. Sorin’s secretive guardianship had produced the very vulnerability he believed only he could prevent.

Sorin continued to defend Innistrad through family conflict, planar war and the return of old enemies. His methods remain authoritarian and his compassion selective, yet he repeatedly acts when total destruction threatens people who may never thank him. He is useful precisely because the difference between protector and ruler is never comfortable in his hands.
