Why Sorin Markov matters

Sorin became a vampire through his grandfather Edgar’s blood ritual, an ordeal whose force ignited his spark. Millennia of travel made him one of the oldest active planeswalkers, but Innistrad remained the place he treated as his responsibility. He did not seek to eliminate its monsters; he sought a balance in which humanity endured and predators did not destroy their own future.

Long before Innistrad's later crises, Sorin joined Ugin and Nahiri to contain the Eldrazi on Zendikar. When Nahiri's summons went unanswered, she repaired the breach alone and sought him out. Sorin acknowledged that his protections might have blocked the signal. Their confrontation ended with him sealing her inside the Helvault. His duty to one world had become an excuse to dismiss an obligation to another.

Creating Avacyn had helped preserve Innistrad's humans and the vampires dependent on them. When she became their persecutor, Sorin offered to remake her mind. She refused, and he unmade her in the cellar where she began. He could neither replace her nor build another Helvault. Necessity did not make the loss repairable.

Nahiri retaliated by drawing Emrakul to Innistrad. In their duel, she trapped Sorin in stone whose continual injuries prevented him from concentrating enough to escape. He remained alive, forced to watch. Her victory carried their feud into the suffering of an entire world rather than settling what either owed it.

By Olivia Voldaren's wedding to Edgar, Sorin was free again, but family loyalty had become another trap. Edgar attacked him and left him in a blood pit. Sorin recovered, defeated his grandfather and chose not to kill him. He accepted a moment of understanding from Teferi and the other planeswalkers rather than pretending the encounter had left him untouched. Afterward, Sorin stays to help the fallen and injured, offering Markov Manor to those needing longer care. Arlinn reads concern beneath his insistence that superior medical texts are the reason.

That is not the history of the Echoverse werewolf Sorin who opposes his grandfather alongside a different Avacyn. Nor does Edgar's later retreat to Havengul establish Sorin's own current whereabouts or spark state.
