Why Nicol Bolas matters

Born among Dominaria’s Elder Dragons, Bolas learned early to make intellect a weapon as decisive as claw or flame. Across thousands of years he built empires, cultivated agents and studied the weaknesses of rivals. Defeat at the hands of Tetsuo Umezawa cost him his body and rule over Madara, but even death became a delay rather than an ending.

The Mending reduced the old scale of planeswalker power. Bolas experienced that change not as a shared limit but as theft, and much of his later strategy aimed to reverse it. He manipulated conflicts on Alara, Zendikar, Tarkir and other planes while arranging resources whose purpose only became clear after decades. Individual victories against him rarely escaped the larger structure he had prepared.

Amonkhet became his factory for conquest. Bolas rewrote its culture, corrupted its gods and turned generations of tested warriors into the lazotep Dreadhorde. Through Tezzeret he gained the Planar Bridge; through Ravnica’s Beacon and Immortal Sun he gained a gathering place and prison. The War of the Spark was designed to make other planeswalkers deliver their sparks directly to him.

Bolas underestimated choices he considered irrational. Ravnica’s guilds cooperated, Liliana rejected survival under his contract and Gideon gave his life to sustain her rebellion. The reversed Eternals and Hazoret’s spear stripped away his advantage before Ugin removed his name, power and escape. Bolas ended the war imprisoned in the Meditation Realm: alive, but reduced to the obscurity he had spent ages teaching the Multiverse to fear.
