Why Saheeli Rai matters
Saheeli became Ghirapur’s celebrated metalsmith by making invention look effortless. She can draw threads of metal into intricate forms, command artifacts with magic and reproduce creatures she has observed as mechanical wonders. Public acclaim at the Inventors’ Fair never exposed the full source of her gift. Her spark remained private, while journeys to other planes quietly enlarged the library of shapes, movements and ideas behind her work.
Tezzeret’s seizure of the Consulate forced Saheeli to decide what invention served when authority turned every creation into property or weapon. She joined the renegades and the Gatewatch in resisting that control, contributing knowledge of Ghirapur that no visitor could replace. Liberating the city did not require rejecting technology. It required restoring the right to imagine, build and share without a ruler deciding which minds were allowed to matter.
When Huatli arrived on Avishkar after igniting her own spark, Saheeli welcomed wonder instead of treating inexperience as weakness. Dinosaurs became a workshop challenge, conversation became affection and two very different creators found a shared language. Saheeli later fought on Ravnica and moved between public crises and a personal bond that gave planeswalking a destination rather than merely another source of inspiration.
On Dominaria, Saheeli built a facsimile Sylex and the Temporal Anchor that carried Teferi’s spirit into the Brothers’ War. During the Phyrexian invasion she stood with Huatli on Ixalan, then lost her spark in the Multiverse’s upheaval. For a time she remained on Ixalan, finding comfort with Huatli while the absence of planeswalking still felt like an injury. Omenpaths offered another way to travel together.
Saheeli later returned to Avishkar after her stay with Huatli on Ixalan.
