Dina leads Morphia, Lorenin and Basil toward the lake spirit called the Devotion. Basil is still grieving Mertyn and resents every lesson that turns loss into an academic cycle. Dina protects him because she recognises the pain, but protection has begun to deny him the right to decide what the pain means.
The Devotion tests the students with water, cold and the shape of their grief. Morphia and Lorenin combine what they have learned to quiet the attack. Basil receives no dramatic revelation. He places the spirit’s skull back in the lake and makes a simpler choice than his mentors expected.
Basil leaves magic rather than converting grief into a Witherbloom calling. Dina asks what her teaching failed to provide, then accepts that departure is not necessarily rejection. A student can learn enough to choose another life, and a mentor’s care is measured partly by whether that choice remains possible.
