Jace returns to Liliana carrying a theory that makes her the architect of the crisis. He presses into her private thoughts, and the encounter becomes a contest of coercion rather than an exchange of findings. The Chain Veil answers his intrusion with dangerous force; the Raven Man encourages the lethal solution.
Liliana refuses that solution. The choice does not suddenly make her gentle, nor does it erase the ways she has hurt Jace. It establishes a boundary at a moment when suspicion and power could easily become an execution. She offers to use her local connections to investigate instead.
Jace insists on finding Avacyn in Thraben and leaves despite her warning. Liliana cannot make him accept care simply by expressing it in terms of control. Their confrontation gives the mystery a personal cost: an investigator who cannot trust his own perceptions can also mistake help for imprisonment. Restraint keeps a possibility open, but it cannot by itself restore the relationship or resolve the danger.
