Jace Beleren
Mind mage, investigator and reluctant architect of plans
Jace can enter minds, sculpt illusions and erase memory, yet his defining struggle is deciding when knowledge grants the right to act. He wants connection while carrying powers that can easily destroy the trust on which connection depends.
Profile
Why Jace Beleren matters
Jace grew up on Vryn with telepathy he could not safely control. The sphinx Alhammarret offered instruction, then manipulated the young mage and used him as a political tool. Their final mental confrontation ignited Jace's spark and damaged his memories, leaving him powerful, displaced and uncertain of his own history.
On Ravnica, Jace built a life around mysteries. He became the Living Guildpact, carrying the magical authority meant to hold the city's ten guilds in balance, and later helped found the Gatewatch. Both roles repeatedly turned the private, analytical mage into a public decision-maker. His clever plans could save worlds, but they could also encourage him to treat friends as pieces whose risks he had already calculated.
Defeat on Amonkhet cast Jace onto Ixalan without his memories. Starting again revealed a warmer and more adaptable person than the strategist he believed he had to be. His partnership with Vraska became genuine because neither of them could rely on the old roles that had made them enemies. Recovering his past did not erase what that experience taught him.
Jace fought Bolas on Ravnica and later designed the strike against New Phyrexia. That mission ended in his compleation, turning the planner into one of Norn's most dangerous assets. His disappearance after the invasion leaves a deliberate uncertainty around him: immense intelligence remains, but so does the question that has followed him from Vryn—whether he can pursue a necessary truth without deciding that only he should control it.
