Seven lives beyond the central expedition show a university learning how to teach, grieve and share knowledge after the Multiverse opened its doors

Off the Record

Student reporter Jilesa follows a flattering professor into a sealed vault and learns too late that her ambition has been recruited to steal forbidden knowledge.

Jilesa Clarus wants investigations worthy of her talent, not a polite faculty profile. Guest lecturer Ral Zarek recognises that frustration and redirects it toward a secret expedition. His praise gives her exactly the validation her adviser withheld, so confidentiality feels like access rather than warning.

Jilesa and her image-maker Esmun cross a lethal maze to reach the Vaults of Turrau. Her summoned inklings map the safe path, while Esmun records it. Inside, Jilesa uses secret-seeking magic to locate a hidden book, unaware that every obstacle has been chosen to make her abilities do someone else’s work.

Zarek takes the volume, abandons both students among the vault’s guardians and reveals that even his identity was part of the manipulation. Jilesa’s final insight is painfully professional: secrecy did not make the assignment important. It removed the witnesses who might have protected her.
