Seven lives beyond the central expedition show a university learning how to teach, grieve and share knowledge after the Multiverse opened its doors

Winnowing Season

Killian deliberately loses a duel and uses the lesson to reshape a diplomatic ritual that preserves procedure while giving old enemies a way forward.

At the Forum of Amity, Killian serves as a duellist and watches ritual release neither anger nor fear. He yields a contest to Crownflower after recognising desperation in his opponent, then meets Verdis and discovers that their peoples’ dispute is being carried by younger lives expected to inherit it.

Embrose Lu’s Naming Tithe forces the delegations to describe one another, but its formal success only smooths the language of resentment. Killian sees that commands and humiliation cannot create reconciliation. Tradition has diagnosed the wound without giving anyone a safe way to act differently.

Killian adds a witnessing sigil to a dangerous private duel, changing total victory into shared obligation. Crownflower and Verdis adapt the method for their leaders, and competitive display becomes a form of communion. Killian and Embrose begin to revise the ritual together, including their own difficult bond in the work.
