DEFENDERS, ENEMIES AND NECESSARY ALLIES

Innistrad: Three Battlefronts

While Emrakul approaches Thraben, Nahiri traps Sorin, Thalia and Sigarda confront corrupted angels, and the Gatewatch learns that Zendikar's plan cannot simply be repeated.

Why this story matters

The route in brief

The same disaster can produce very different battles. One planeswalker pursues revenge, local defenders fight beings they once trusted, and outsiders arrive with a method that worked on another world. None of those struggles can be understood entirely through the others.

These three accounts deepen the Eldritch Moon crisis. They show overlapping fronts, not the full resolution of Emrakul's arrival. A duel's victor may leave the world in greater danger; winning against an angelic horror may preserve one defender while another tide advances.

The last encounter ends with an uneasy alliance rather than a finished solution. Liliana's intervention matters precisely because the Gatewatch's first approach has failed, and accepting her help requires acknowledging its cost.

Story Chapters

  1. Nahiri makes Sorin watch the fate of his world

Sorin's attack gives Nahiri the opening to bind him in stone, while Olivia refuses to release him.

Sorin pursued Nahiri through the broken structures of Markov Manor while Emrakul loomed over his world. Their fight was personal as well as planetary: Zendikar's abandoned prison, the Helvault and Avacyn's loss shaped what each wanted to take from the other.

When Sorin bit her, Nahiri tightened stone around him. Its continual injuries prevented the concentration he needed to planeswalk away. She turned him toward Innistrad's approaching disaster and departed.

Olivia regarded her own bargain as fulfilled and refused his plea for release. Winning this confrontation did not mean Nahiri had saved a world or Olivia could control its future. Sorin remained alive, immobilised and forced to watch.

  2. A human and a saint confront the fused archangels

Traft's aid lets Thalia use Avacyn's broken spear to free Sigarda from Bruna and Gisela's monstrous combined form.

Thalia fought through Thraben with Traft's spirit helping her, while former protectors and fellow cathars had become horrors. Her attempt against the fused Bruna and Gisela ended with her gryff dead and her own body pinned and injured.

Sigarda intervened but was seized by her sisters. Traft helped Thalia recover and wield Avacyn's broken spear; borrowed angelic wings brought her back into the fight.

Thalia's strikes freed Sigarda and brought the fused creature down. The moment preserved the sane archangel without restoring her sisters. Above the continuing battle, Emrakul's approach drove another surge of creatures forward. Their real victory had not ended the invasion.

  3. Liliana's army keeps the Gatewatch alive

Nissa's glyph fails against the corrupted leylines, leaving Liliana's undead intervention as an immediate defence.

The Gatewatch tried to adapt the Zendikar plan by drawing on Innistrad's leylines and channeling their force through Chandra. The cryptolith network had already redirected the available power, and Nissa's attempt left her unconscious as the attackers closed in.

Liliana sent an organised undead army into the square and reached the exhausted group with the Chain Veil. Nissa recoiled from that power, while Gideon argued for taking necessary allies.

Jace still wanted to finish their task rather than retreat. Liliana challenged the optimism that had brought them here, but her army made further deliberation possible. The scene ends with a difficult dependence acknowledged, not a claim that Emrakul has already been stopped.
