Nissa Revane

Animist, worldwaker and listener to the soul of the land

Nissa hears worlds as living systems rather than scenery. Her fierce bond with Zendikar grew into care for an entire Multiverse, even as exile, compleation and the loss of her spark forced her to rethink what belonging means.

Profile

Why Nissa Revane matters

Nissa was born among the Joraga elves of Zendikar with an ability that frightened people around her: she could feel the voice and pain of the plane itself. Isolation made that gift difficult to understand. When her spark carried her away, she discovered that other worlds also possessed distinct living presences.

She returned to Zendikar as the Eldrazi threatened it and became capable of awakening the land on an enormous scale. Cooperation with Gideon, Jace and Chandra helped save the plane and led her into the Gatewatch. The oath widened her sense of home, but it did not erase the tension between protecting a world and following plans made far from it.

After the Gatewatch's defeat on Amonkhet, Nissa rejected leadership she believed had spent lives carelessly. Her relationship with Chandra remained unfinished, shaped by affection, distance and repeated crises. Nissa could speak clearly with landscapes, yet found the vulnerability of speaking for herself much harder.

New Phyrexia corrupted her bond with nature and used it to steer Realmbreaker. As a compleated defender of Realmbreaker, Nissa fought the Mirran resistance while Chandra and Wrenn sought the trunk; the angelic Elspeth intervened as Wrenn bonded with Eight. On Zhalfir, Melira and Karn helped free Nissa from Phyrexian control at the cost of Melira's life and the remainder of Venser's spark. Ajani retained his spark after the same healing, but Nissa did not. Stranded away from Zendikar, she had to build a future in which her identity came from attention and choice rather than the ability to leave whenever belonging became painful.

The Ghirapur Grand Prix made the difference between loss and repair explicit. Chandra wanted to win an artificial spark for her; Nissa needed their future to be a shared decision, not a problem solved in her absence. She remained an actor in her own life, not merely the reason another hero entered a race.

The Aetherspark went to Amonkhet's champions. Nissa did not regain planeswalking through that prize. Her relationship with Chandra continued through the difficult work of listening and choosing together, rather than a convenient restoration of everything Phyrexia had taken.
