Kaya Cassir
Ghost assassin whose contracts keep turning into responsibilities
Kaya's ghost magic can end an immortal ruler or carry someone through a wall. Returning to Ravnica after the invasion made the harder task personal: confronting grief without making every wrong another assassination contract.
Profile
Why Kaya Cassir matters
Kaya built a profession around an ability few defences can answer. By phasing into the spirit realm she can pass through solid matter, carry another person through a barrier at painful risk and touch incorporeal beings as if they were flesh. She sells those talents, but payment is not her only rule. Kaya wants to believe a target deserves the sentence before she accepts the contract.
On Fiora she assassinated the ghost king Brago, proving that death offered no immunity from politics. Bolas later arranged for her to remove the Obzedat and inherit leadership of the Orzhov Syndicate on Ravnica. The office tied Kaya to the guild’s debts and to a plane she had expected to leave. When Bolas attacked, she turned against his design, helped destroy his Eternals and swore an oath to the Gatewatch.
A hunt for a monster took Kaya to Kaldheim, where the realms did not obey the boundaries her planeswalking usually crossed. She exposed Tibalt’s disguise, fought beside Tyvar and learned that Vorinclex’s presence pointed beyond the local war. On Innistrad her experience with spirits again made her valuable. Each assignment broadened the difference between killing a target and protecting everyone endangered by the same threat.
Kaya joined the strike team sent into New Phyrexia and became one of the few members able to carry allies through otherwise fatal barriers. The mission collapsed under compleation, divided loyalties and impossible choices; she escaped to help defend Kamigawa and witnessed Tamiyo’s death. Kaya remains mobile and unsentimental in speech, but her record keeps contradicting the idea that she can simply take the fee and walk away.
On returning to Ravnica, Kaya found a city that judged her absence as readily as her service. Zegana died during Teysa's gala; days later Kaya found Teysa murdered as well. Helping the Agency investigate meant remaining with a loss her ability to leave could not settle.
At Vitu-Ghazi she helped bind Oba rather than execute a helpless captive. Teysa later appeared as a ghost and confirmed helping finish the binding with Kaya and Etrata. She released Kaya from the debt Kaya felt and resumed Orzhov leadership. Kaya chose to leave before grief could turn her into an executioner.
