The route in brief

Innistrad’s crisis began as a mystery rather than an invasion. People heard impossible signals, familiar creatures changed shape and Avacyn’s protection turned against the humans it had once defended. Jace arrived looking for Sorin and found a plane where evidence itself felt unreliable. Tamiyo had already begun recording the same fractures through astronomy, folklore and the behaviour of the moon.

The cause connected two older failures. Sorin’s creation of Avacyn had concentrated Innistrad’s safety in one guardian, making corruption catastrophic. His broken promise to Nahiri had also transformed Zendikar’s suffering into a grievance aimed at an entire world. Nahiri did not merely attack Sorin; she arranged for his home to experience an Eldrazi arrival after its strongest protection had been removed.

The final victory resisted the pattern established on Zendikar. Emrakul could not be burned away, so the defenders used Innistrad’s silver moon as a new prison. Yet the titan changed Tamiyo’s spell and entered confinement on her own terms. The Gatewatch saved the plane without understanding whether it had defeated Emrakul, delayed her or completed a stage she considered necessary.

Story Chapters

  1. A world turns against itself

    Innistrad’s protections became sources of fear as madness and physical distortion spread without a visible invader.

    Jace came to Innistrad after Ugin urged the Gatewatch to find Sorin. Instead of an ally, he found clues scattered through Markov Manor, the Drownyard and villages losing their grip on ordinary reality. The symptoms crossed species and institutions, which made a single criminal or local curse an increasingly weak explanation.

    Avacyn and her angels had begun judging humanity as the corruption they were created to contain. Wards failed, cathars lost their moral centre and people who relied on the Church discovered that obedience no longer offered safety. The protector’s authority made her change more dangerous than any isolated monster.

    The investigation forced Jace to work differently. Telepathy could expose a mind, but the mystery existed in architecture, tides, symbols and stories accumulated over generations. Tamiyo’s journal gave him another method: compare patterns, preserve contradictions and treat a world’s folklore as evidence rather than decoration.

  2. Tamiyo’s unfinished story

    Tamiyo and Jace traced the madness to Avacyn while recognising that the angel might be the first victim rather than the first cause.

    Tamiyo had approached Innistrad as a scholar, recording its moon and the stories that organised life beneath it. Her research placed Avacyn at the centre of the disturbance, but centre did not necessarily mean origin. Something beyond the plane was pressing through its most important structures.

    Jace and Tamiyo confronted the angel in Thraben Cathedral and could not hold her. Avacyn adapted to their magic and carried the authority of every ward built around her name. Sorin arrived knowing that rescue was no longer possible. He unmade his own creation rather than let her complete the destruction of the people she existed to protect.

    Avacyn’s death ended one danger and opened the plane to another. The angel had been a stabilising force even while corrupted, a final obstruction in a design neither investigator yet saw completely. Solving the visible mystery had removed the lock from the deeper one.

  3. Nahiri demands payment

    A thousand years in the Helvault and the devastation of Zendikar turned Nahiri’s grievance with Sorin into punishment for Innistrad.

    Nahiri had once guarded the Eldrazi prison on Zendikar while Sorin and Ugin promised to return if it weakened. When neither answered, she repaired the network alone and confronted Sorin on Innistrad. Their conflict ended with Nahiri sealed inside the Helvault, unable to return home as the prison failed again.

    Freedom brought her back to a devastated Zendikar. Nahiri treated that loss as evidence that Sorin’s home should endure the same terror. She shaped stone across Innistrad into a vast signal, bent the plane’s cryptoliths toward one purpose and used the moon and landscape to call across the Blind Eternities.

    Her revenge deliberately exceeded Sorin. Farmers, cathars, spirits and entire ecosystems became the medium of a dispute most inhabitants could never understand. Nahiri’s love for Zendikar had become an argument that another home could be sacrificed, repeating the old logic that placed Eldrazi risk on her own plane.

  4. Emrakul enters Innistrad

    With Avacyn gone and the cryptolith network complete, the last Eldrazi titan reshaped life simply by approaching.

    Emrakul’s arrival did not resemble Ulamog’s hunger or Kozilek’s geometric destruction. Her presence rewrote living forms and thoughts. Angels fused, bodies blossomed into impossible anatomy and communities began treating transformation as revelation. The invasion spread through perception as readily as flesh.

    Jace and Tamiyo identified the titan but could not oppose her alone. Mental defences offered temporary clarity, not a way to remove something operating on the scale of a plane. Jace left to call the Gatewatch, accepting that solving the mystery had only defined the battlefield.

    Gideon, Chandra and Nissa answered. Their experience on Zendikar gave them confidence and a dangerous expectation that the same kind of victory could be repeated. Innistrad’s damaged leylines and Emrakul’s different nature made destruction an answer the plane could not support.

  5. Liliana holds the field

    Liliana’s undead army created the time the Gatewatch needed, turning self-interest into an act no other defender could perform.

    Liliana initially watched the crisis from Vess Manor, focused on the Chain Veil and the demons controlling her contract. Innistrad’s dead were unusually resistant to Emrakul’s transformation, giving her necromancy an advantage living armies lacked. That usefulness did not make her motives suddenly simple.

    At Thraben, Liliana brought an immense host of zombies against Emrakul’s changed followers. The attack pushed the titan back and kept the Gatewatch from being overwhelmed, but the Chain Veil strained her body and judgement. Power that could save a plane was still power capable of consuming its wielder.

    Her intervention mattered because she chose to remain when departure was possible. The Gatewatch needed exactly the person it distrusted, and Liliana needed allies for conflicts she could not survive alone. Their cooperation began as a practical bargain before anyone could describe it as belonging.

  6. The moon becomes a prison

    Jace and Tamiyo bound Emrakul into the silver moon, only to discover that the titan had rewritten the ending.

    Avacyn’s final words suggested a solution: what could not be destroyed must be bound. The Helvault had been made from Innistrad’s silver moon, so Tamiyo prepared a spell able to turn the larger body into a prison. Nissa supplied what power she could draw from a plane that resisted her touch.

    Jace attached the binding to Emrakul while Gideon, Chandra, Liliana and their forces held the shrinking perimeter. Tamiyo opened a scroll whose original contents promised devastation. The spell that emerged was different. Emrakul had reached through Tamiyo and changed the story being read.

    The titan folded into the moon and a glyph marked the seal. Innistrad survived, and Liliana joined the Gatewatch under terms tied to her remaining demons. Tamiyo understood the unresolved cost: Emrakul had chosen confinement because the time was not yet right. The defenders had won the day without owning its final meaning.
