Ajani Goldmane
Leonin healer, mentor and survivor of Phyrexian control
Ajani’s magic strengthens the identity and courage of others. His life moves from an outcast’s search for his brother’s killer to patient mentorship, then through the horror of compleation and the difficult responsibility of surviving what Phyrexia made him do.
Profile
Why Ajani Goldmane matters
Ajani was born among Naya’s leonin with pale fur that marked him as an outsider. His brother Jazal defended him and held their pride together, so Jazal’s murder left Ajani with grief sharpened into vengeance. The shock ignited his spark. Following the conspiracy across Alara taught him to see the soul of another being and to draw out its strength, a gift he eventually used against Nicol Bolas rather than becoming another instrument of rage.
Travel widened Ajani’s idea of community. He befriended Elspeth and supported her search for belonging on Theros, then mourned when Heliod killed her. As a mentor to younger planeswalkers and a member of the Gatewatch, he often supplied the patience that urgent plans lacked. His power protected bodies, but his deeper role was reminding isolated people that accepting help did not make them weak.
Phyrexia turned that trust into a weapon. Secretly compleated before the defence of Dominaria, Ajani appeared to remain himself until he murdered Jaya and revealed the enemy within the coalition. Under Norn’s control he led invasions and fought Elspeth, carrying a familiar face into every betrayal. The violation was especially cruel because it converted his instinct to unite people into enforced unity.
After New Phyrexia fell, Melira, Karn, Kaya and Teferi removed the corruption from Ajani and Nissa. Restoration did not erase memory or consequence. Ajani awoke to Jaya’s death, friends he had attacked and a Multiverse rebuilding without simple absolution. His next form of courage is quieter than battle: accepting that responsibility can require living, listening and repairing relationships that sacrifice alone cannot mend.
