Urza gathered nine planeswalkers and equipped them for a direct strike at Phyrexia. Freyalise, Lord Windgrace and other oldwalkers carried soul bombs through the plane’s layers. The mission demonstrated power on a scale ordinary armies could not approach, but its design still depended on Urza anticipating every betrayal.
Tevesh Szat murdered members of the group and was killed in turn, his essence used to power Urza’s weapons. The response had been prepared in advance, showing both Urza’s tactical brilliance and the moral trap of a plan that recruited treachery because it could be converted into fuel.
Near Yawgmoth’s centre, Urza’s hatred gave way to awe at Phyrexian artifice. Gerrard was drawn into the same confrontation, and the two were made to fight. The architect who had demanded sacrifices from everyone else could not complete his own mission. His assault left the final defence to the crew operating outside his control.
