Sita and Winter reached Ghirapur nearly together, only to crash into a barrier raised across the track. Mohar's allies seized the finish area in the name of restoring the Consulate. When Sita's mask broke, her father responded with fear for her safety and immediate possession of her future. His tenderness did not soften the coup's purpose. He wanted a society—and a daughter—returned to positions he considered natural.
Chandra's improvised crew arrived above the same crisis. Jace and Vraska stood among the old Consulate forces, focused on taking Loot back. Jace dismissed explanation, rendered Loot unconscious and used the other racers as weapons when Chandra refused him. Vraska's hesitation showed that their alliance contained disagreement, but she still left with him after his mental assault felled Chandra. Their claim of guardianship had become indistinguishable from the control Loot had already escaped.
A dragonstorm then broke across Ghirapur. The storm carried a dragon into a city already fighting itself and revealed that something larger was moving between planes. Elspeth held the creature back while Nissa crossed the city to reach Chandra. The finish line no longer separated winners from losers. It concentrated every danger of the new Multiverse: old regimes using connection as cover, former heroes treating a child as a key and forces from one world erupting without warning into another.
